Whether you’re a casual people-watcher or an urban designer, we’d love for you to join our posting team or send an interesting link our way!
This blog is still being shaped, the main guidelines are simply that posts be approachable and conversational (trying to avoid jargon) and support the vision of promoting people-centered thinking about places.
post ideas…
- Good places/Bad places: Examples of places that create good or bad experiences, and why.
- Interesting ideas: Interesting approaches to place design or research.
- Underappreciated places: Hidden gems or places with untapped potential.
- Thoughtless acts: Photos of people interacting with or responding to their environment.
- Critiques: User-centered critiques of plans and proposed projects.
how to write a place critique…
Say you have an axe to grind with Wal Mart:
DO: Talk about the difficulty walking to the front door from a transit stop, the stressful experience of the check-out line, or the overwhelming feeling you get walking into a Super WalMart.
DON’T: Discuss their labor policy, global environmental impacts, or economic effects UNLESS you can relate it to the experience of the place (e.g. “gridlock in the parking lot spews pollution”).
Do feel free to put in a good word for ol’ Wal Mart too.
